Napolitano Applauds Supreme Court Ruling on DACA, Calls for Action to Permanently Protect Dreamers
(WASHINGTON, DC) Today, Rep. Grace F. Napolitano (D-El Monte), released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling against President Trump’s decision to end DACA:
“The highest court in the land has rejected the Trump administration’s heartless crusade to terminate DACA, calling DHS’ decision to rescind the program ‘arbitrary and capricious under the Administrative Procedure Act.’ This means the Trump administration violated the law in how it went about rescinding the program, which shields certain immigrant youth from deportation and for which poll after poll show widespread support, including those from the President’s own party. To President Trump, however, the ruling today was merely a roadblock. We must believe he will again pursue the elimination of DACA, and so our work is not finished.
“To provide full protection and lasting certainty, we must pass a permanent legislative solution. The bipartisan American Dream and Promise Act, H.R. 6, passed the House over one year ago and is sitting in the Senate right now. We implore the Senate Majority Leader to stop blocking the bill and show compassion and fairness to young immigrants who have made our nation proud. It is the right thing to do for our young people and for our country.
“Dreamers continue to embody our American ideals, values, and everything we hold dear. They are proud servicemembers, students, teachers, health care workers, first responders, and entrepreneurs. Over 200,000 DACA recipients have helped keep our country running during the COVID-19 pandemic, working in occupations deemed essential. The DACA program has allowed hundreds of thousands more individuals to build a life here and make positive, significant contributions to the U.S. economy and their communities. We will continue to fight for them, their families, and for true, comprehensive immigration reform that honors our heritage as a proud nation of immigrants, upholds our laws, and reflects our values.”
